Winter Foods
Warming stews made from the wide range of root crops and winter squash are perfect for the colder weather
Mix n Match Recipe
Always keep a few onions and a bulb of garlic in your store, with these two flavourings you can turn almost any combination of vegetables into a warming soup or broth and with a few more spices a great curry.
Start by frying a few sliced onions in oil or butter, add some chopped garlic, then add chopped root veg and continue to fry until gold spots appear on most pieces (this increases the flavour). If you're making curry add the curry powder (or sauce) now and fry for another minute or so. Then add enough water that it doesn't quite cover the veg pieces and boil until all the veg is tender and water has reduced. Broth or curry is now ready to serve (season to taste). If making soup you could puree or mash the veg and then add a little more water to consistency required.
Winter Salads
With tomatoes and cucumbers only available from abroad use potato salad, coleslaw and cold boiled beetroot as the mainstay of winter salads. Instead of chives use a small amount of onion in the potato salad. Lemons are the only imported thing I wouldn't be without. they add extra flavour to potato salad and coleslaw as well as soups and curries.
